Largely inspired by the Moto 360, LG is gearing up to release a second Android Wear powered smartwatch before the end of 2014 called the LG G Watch R. We are assuming that the “R” stands for round. The first watch was the LG G Watch, which sported a rectangular design. LG is set to introduce the watch properly at IFA 2014.The LG G Watch R features the first ever Plastic-OLED (or P-OLED) display which allows for a more pleasant experience when using the watch in the sunlight. The biggest feature of the LG G Watch R is that it will have a circular design. The circular design is why most people have been holding out on LG’s previous Android Wear offering for the Moto 360s instead. In order to steal some of the thunder surrounding the Moto 360′s circular design, LG informally announced their circular watch just a week before the Moto 360 will be available.
Compared to the Moto 360, the LG G Watch R uses 100 percent of the screen. The Moto 360 has a small section at the bottom which has a cut out in the screen that houses the brightness sensor.
While the Moto 360 will be the first smartwatch with Android Wear and a circular design, the LG G Watch R resembles a traditional watch more so than the Moto 360 with the LG G Watch R utilizing a bezel that surrounds the face.
The LG G Watch R will feature 512MB of RAM, 4GB of local storage, a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 processor from Qualcomm and a battery rated at 410mAh which is similar to LG’s previous watch, the LG G watch.
Like the Moto 360, the LG G Watch R includes an optical heart rate sensor which their previous offering lacked. It will also include the run-of-the mill sensors including a gyroscope, accelerometer, compass and barometer. The watch, as expected, has an IP67 rating which makes it just as dust and water resistant as the Samsung Galaxy S5. In theory, it will be submersible for 30 minutes within a depth range of up to one meter.
Like Google’s vague launching dates regarding the Moto 360, LG is yet to spill the beans on a more accurate date for the availability of the LG G Watch R. What’s even worst is that we don’t know how much the LG G Watch R will cost. If that information isn’t available before the launch of the Moto 360, it’s possible that people will be more likely to jump the gun and get the Moto 360 at the reasonable price of $249.99
