Apple has just announced that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have broken another Apple record. The duo handsets have combined for 10 million sales during opening weekend lasting from September 19th to the 21st. Opening weekend accounts for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK.
According to Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook:
Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier. We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply, and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.
Looking back on the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C opening weekend, the two combined to make up for 9 million in sales that has now become an old record broken by the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus sold 1 million more than the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C
According to a few analyst, the 10 million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales are the result of a high demand for larger iPhones as well as supply constraints. Had Apple been able to produce more iPhone 6 and 6 Plus phones, the numbers would still climb higher. However, this is a limiting factor with every iPhone launch.
Previously, Apple had announced that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus had broken the 24-hour pre-order which started back on September 12th. The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus accounted for 4 million in pre-sale orders. The iPhone 5 was able to achieve half of that amount. Keep in mind that’s a comparison between one phone model’s pre-sales to two phone models’ pre-sale numbers.
It’s good to see that, despite moving into new screen size territory, Apple’s iPhone are still doing amazingly well. It will be interesting to see how competitors will respond to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
